Drain Cleaning for Gardena Homes
One slow sink is usually a simple clog. Several slow drains at once can mean a main line problem. Knowing the difference helps you describe the job and avoid surprises.

One clogged drain or the main line?
Short answer: if only one fixture is slow, the clog is usually in that fixture's drain or trap. If several drains are slow at once, water rises in the tub when you flush, or the lowest drains back up first, the blockage is likely in the main sewer line. That needs a different approach.
- Single drain clog: one sink, one tub or one toilet. Often hair, soap, food scraps or grease.
- Branch line clog: several fixtures in one bathroom or one side of the house.
- Main line clog: drains throughout the house, gurgling, or water coming out of the outdoor cleanout. See sewer line repair.
What you can safely try first
- Use a plunger made for the fixture (a cup plunger for sinks and tubs, a flange plunger for toilets).
- Remove and clean a sink or tub stopper; hair often collects right there.
- Clean the trap under a sink if you're comfortable doing so. Put a bucket underneath first.
- Stop running water into a drain that is backing up.
Avoid harsh chemical drain cleaners, especially on a main line backup. They can damage some pipes, sit in a blocked line, and make the job more hazardous for whoever clears it.
How providers clear drains
- Snaking (cabling): a rotating cable breaks up or retrieves the clog.
- Camera inspection: shows what caused a repeat clog, such as roots, a sag or broken pipe.
- Hydro jetting: high-pressure water cleans grease and roots from the pipe wall. See hydro jetting in Gardena.
Common causes of clogs in Gardena homes
- Kitchen grease and food scraps that harden inside the line.
- Hair and soap in bathroom drains.
- Wipes, paper towels and hygiene products flushed down toilets.
- Tree roots entering older sewer laterals.
- Old or sagging pipe where waste settles.
When a clog is urgent
Sewage coming up into a tub, shower or floor drain is a health risk. Stop using water, keep children and pets away and call for help. Our emergency plumbing page lists what to do while you wait.
Cost factors
We don't publish prices; each provider sets its own. Price usually depends on which line is blocked, access (an outdoor cleanout or pulling a toilet), whether a camera inspection or jetting is needed, and whether it is an after-hours visit.
Questions to ask
- Is this a single drain clog or a main line problem?
- Do you recommend a camera inspection, and is it included?
- What is the cost if the first method doesn't clear it?
- What is your California contractor license number? Check it with the Contractors State License Board.
Drain cleaning FAQs
How do I know if my main drain line is clogged?
Several slow drains at once, water rising in the tub when you flush, gurgling and water coming out of the outdoor cleanout all point to the main line rather than a single fixture.
Should I use chemical drain cleaner?
It is best to avoid harsh chemical drain cleaners, especially on a main line backup. They can harm some pipes and make the job more hazardous for the person clearing it.
Why does my drain keep clogging?
Repeat clogs often come from grease buildup, roots, a sag in the line or damaged pipe. A camera inspection shows the cause so it can be fixed rather than just cleared.
What is the difference between snaking and hydro jetting?
Snaking breaks through a clog with a rotating cable. Hydro jetting uses high-pressure water to clean the whole pipe wall and is often used for grease and roots.
Is a clogged toilet an emergency?
Usually not, if other toilets work. It becomes urgent if sewage is backing up into other fixtures or the home.
