Trenchless Water Line Repair: When It May Be an Option

"Trenchless" means replacing or rehabilitating a buried pipe with less excavation. It can protect a driveway or landscaping, but it isn't right for every property.

The short answer

Trenchless water line work typically uses a small access pit at each end of the line instead of a continuous trench. Whether it's suitable depends on the existing pipe, the route, the soil and what's underground nearby.

Availability: We can't promise that a provider offering trenchless methods will be available when you call. Ask the provider directly whether they offer it and whether your property is a good fit.

Common trenchless approaches for supply lines

  • Pipe pulling or pipe bursting: a new pipe is pulled through the path of the old one, which is split or displaced.
  • Directional boring: a new path is bored underground and the new pipe is pulled through it.

Lining methods are more common for sewer pipes than for small pressurized water service lines. Ask a provider what applies to yours.

Conditions that affect suitability

  • Existing pipe material and size, which affects whether it can be split or used as a guide.
  • Route: straight runs are simpler than lines with bends or unknown paths.
  • Soil and obstructions such as rock, roots or old foundations.
  • Nearby utilities that must be located and protected. Utilities are marked through DigAlert / 811 before excavation.
  • Access at both ends: room for pits near the meter and the house.
